To Love God

Madame Guyon was once asked how much she loved God and she replied, "I love Him more than the most passionate lover loves his beloved."

Oh, that God would give us a passionate love for Himself! An enflamed love! A crazy love!

Our desire for God is often hindered by our fear of what others will think, fear of going against society's norms, fear of being different, fear of looking foolish.

And so the box of spikenard is never broken open and the feet of Jesus receive no ointment..."What if others should laugh?" Mary whispers.

And so Jesus walks alone on the water because Peter never leaves the boat..... "What if I should fail?" he asks himself.

And so the Syrophenician woman's daughter is never healed..... "What would my neighbors think?" she says.

And so the treasure remains in the field.....

And the pearl is never purchased....

And, having put our hand to the plow, we look back….

And the kingdom is lost and given to another.
